Association News

29/1/2005

The problems with asbestos are still plaguing the sell off of both ships. A review of procedure is at present being completed by the MOD as this problem is set to have major implications with so many ships now coming out of service to be disposed of. The company looking to Fearless as a backpackers hotel are pressing forward with their plans and only await dry docking for a final hull inspection.

The latest news about Fearless and Intrepid.

The Disposal services are having major problems with the issue of Asbestos in both ships. This has led to a delay in disposal of Intrepid as it is felt that the companies tendering for the scrap have not the means to deal with the problems associated with safe removal of the asbestos. This process is set to take three to four months.

The good news for Fearless is that she is to be dry docked early 2005 for a hull inspection. This is being carried out by a company called Interpub (http://www.interpub.co.uk) as their intention is to turn her into a hotel come hostel in London for up to 700 backpackers. This is a serious bid, as you will understand dry docking is going to cost them in the region of £40,000, and they have also had plans completed by naval architects.
